Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Healthcare for LGBTQ Individuals

Cochran et al. (2017) found that LGBTQ people seek mental healthcare at a higher frequency than the general population due to their increased exposure to stigma-related stress. Moreover, Hatzenbuehler et al. (2013) suggest that stigma can create structural barriers to evidence-based care, making it difficult for these individuals to access and receive appropriate treatment.

Stigma also plays a significant role in increasing the need for mental health services among LGBTQ individuals. Meyer et al. (2008) discovered that stigma can increase stressful demands and undermine coping resources, leading to a greater likelihood of developing stress-sensitive mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, substance use, and suicidality.

Bränström & Pachankis (in press) propose that the multifaceted manifestation of stigma-related stress begins early in LGBTQ development and persists across much of the lifespan. This prolonged exposure to stigma can lead to a higher risk of mental health problems among this population.

In every context where disparities have been examined, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual or gender minority (LGBTQ) individuals are found to be one of the highest-risk populations for stress-sensitive mental health problems (Bränström, 2017; Day et al., 2017; Lipson et al., 2019; Plöderl & Fartacek, 2005; Semlyen et al., 2016).
